Help Roland get to Oxford University – a Personal Causes crowdfunding project in Guildford by Kim Lloyd
Hi I am Kim Lloyd,
I am fundraising for Roland Azuvugu, who has been awarded a place at Oxford University to study a MSc in Environmental Change and Management. Unfortunately, Roland does not have the funds to take up his place coming from a background of abject poverty.
Roland is the 13th of 25 children, growing up in one of the poorest regions of Ghana. He left his home as a child and worked on the street and started his formal education at the age of 14. From then onwards he excelled, winning a presidential award in Junior High School and set unbeaten academic records in his Senior Secondary school.
These achievements secured him a place at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. But, not having the necessary funds he had to work for a year to save up to pay his fees. He was subsequently able to secure a TEST for Ghana scholarship, which is the local Ghanaian charity that administers tertiary education scholarships for TEST for Africa (https://testforafrica.org/), a UK based charity, of which I am a trustee and treasurer. He graduated with a First-Class degree in Petroleum Engineering in 2018.
Making the world a better place
Having lived with people practicing illegal mining and destroying the environment, witnessing first-hand the devastating impact of flooding, and drought, and reading of the impact of toxic mud spilled by oil and gas activities, Roland decided to pursue an MSc in Environmental Change and Management at the University of Oxford.
Roland plans to work with the Ghanaian Environmental Protection Agency when he graduates to push for policies that would guide the exploration activities of oil companies, mining companies and other institutions that interact with the Ghanaian environment. Furthermore, he will initiate conversations geared towards improving waste treatment protocols to prevent contamination of natural water sources by companies thus improving clean water access for local communities. This will transform the Ghanaian EPA and make it a force in the Global Environmental Sustainability space.
What your support will achieve
Roland has been awarded a partial scholarship through the UK Government’s Commonwealth Scholarship programme and the Showa Denko Materials Environmental Scholarship through Linacre College. However we still have a shortfall of £5,000 for a full scholarship including tuition and maintenance fees.
By donating and sharing this with as many people you can to help support Roland. We can raise the funds necessary to help fulfil his dream and potential and make the world a cleaner and greener place. All donations are eligible for Giftaid if you are a UK tax payer (please tick when you donate). I pledge to match the first £500 of donations.
